Name: Jordan Koroknai
Department: Product
Title: UI Designer
Location: United Kingdom
Describe your role at Kisi and how it has developed over your time here:
I work as a User Interface designer at Kisi. This means I’m responsible for how our web dashboard and mobile apps look, how they behave when interacted with and what information we should show to our customers.
In the beginning, my role consisted of making smaller changes and updates to existing product designs to help clear a large backlog. This involved adding elements like filters, dialogs and updating messaging.
Over time this has developed into a much broader role, where I have to think about the overall user experience before I decide whether that button needs to be in blue or red!
When adding new features I make sure to research, benchmark, create multiple solutions that solve the problem and test these both internally and externally. This then leads to wireframing and creating user flows before landing on the final UI that will be seen by our users.
What would you like to tell future possible team members about your team?
The team is always open to new ideas and points of view from anyone. Whether they’re directly involved in the work or from other departments. Getting feedback on our product is important, so we welcome it in any capacity. We even have a specific channel in Discord set up for gaining internal feedback, which we call product dogfooding.
Each day is different. Some tasks are huge, involve numerous teams and can take many weeks to complete, whereas some are just quick edits to messaging or icons that need to be updated before the next release.
What has been your biggest accomplishment at Kisi?
Figma! Converting the team from Sketch to Figma has been my biggest accomplishment I would say. It’s now the sole design software that we use across the company. Allowing us to add comments, make changes on the fly and give everyone access to all the designs, on any device and whenever they need them.
It may have taken me 2 months in the summer to convert everything and develop a robust design system, but it was totally worth it. Now developers, QA teams, product managers and marketing all have access to the latest designs through a single link.
How would you describe Kisi’s culture?
Innovative and inclusive, with a side of Dad jokes…
Human. There is always a strong atmosphere of togetherness. Whether you’re collaborating on a project with multiple people from different backgrounds and time zones, or troubleshooting an urgent issue that needs to be fixed. Everyone works together with an open mind to get things done!
How has your experience been working with an international remote team? How do you all stay connected?
It’s been pretty seamless. Daily communication is all done through Discord and we have weekly online meetings with our direct teams and wider departments.
How do you stay up to date with industry trends/learning?
A lot of the learning for me these days is done through either YouTube or social media. Working in a creative discipline lends itself well to video, reels, and Instagram carousels for bitesize content and tips.
For bigger updates and tech releases I also follow Google’s Material Design blogs and Apple’s Tech Talks.
What is something most people do not know about you?
I used to play dodgeball at the international level for several years and competed all over Europe. I owned my first car at the age of 13 (Austin Mini) and it still comes out of retirement in the summer for the odd drive in the countryside.
What can you usually be found doing on the weekend?
Getting some exercise which helps to offset going out and eating too much food with family and friends...!
